Changeworker of the week #4: Mirella Tay: Empowering Youth for a Greener Future

changeworker of the week Aug 20, 2025

Mirella Tay is on a mission to empower young people in Peru to lead environmental change. Through her work with Por Un Perú Verde, a youth-led environmental network, she supports sustainable initiatives that make a tangible difference in communities, businesses, and institutions.

Her purpose is rooted in a simple yet powerful belief: youth voices aren’t just the future of climate action: they’re the present.

Through the #MyPieceForChange campaign, we invite people to share their unique contributions to collective transformation. This series exists to honor their stories, amplify their voices, and connect them with a wider community of like-minded peers. Today, we’re honored to introduce our fourth Changeworker of the Week: Mirella Tay, whom we had the pleasure of interviewing for this special spotlight.

What’s your piece for change?

My piece for change is empowering young people in Peru to become environmental leaders. Through Por Un Perú Verde, a youth-led environmental network, we support sustainable initiatives in communities, businesses, and institutions

What inspired you to begin this work or stay committed to it?

Living in Peru, I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of environmental degradation, polluted rivers, deforestation, and the vulnerability of communities to climate change. It was through this reality that my passion for sustainability and climate action was born. I saw a need to create space for youth to be at the forefront of solutions, and that's what keeps me going.

What’s one hope or vision you hold for the future?

I envision a future where young people are recognized as key agents of change, where their voices shape environmental policies and their projects transform realities on the ground. I hope for a Peru where sustainability is embedded in all aspects of life, from education to business to government.

What support or connection are you currently looking for?

We are currently looking to collaborate with organizations, mentors, and funders who believe in youth-led environmental transformation. Whether it’s through project partnerships, guidance, or visibility, every connection helps amplify our mission.

What’s one thing about your field or topic you wish more people knew, considered, or acted on?

Climate action is not just about individual choices, it’s about systems, equity, and justice. I wish more people understood that empowering youth is not a symbolic gesture, it’s a powerful strategy to accelerate sustainable change at all levels.

Where can people learn more about your work or connect with you?
