You can’t do everything

Look, I get it. So many causes have my heart. I care about what happens to people all over the world. I care about animals. I care about the fact that we are destroying our only home. I care about genocides and broken international governance. I care about failing school systems and increasing backlash against the little progress we made in deconstructing the patriarchy.

You probably care about more things than you can count, and yet there are only so many hours in a day.

Here’s a quote that transformed how I look at this challenge:

“It can be overwhelming to witness all the injustices of the moment. The good news is that they’re all connected. If your little corner of work involves pulling at one of the threads, you’re helping to unravel the whole damn cloth.”

- Ursula Wolfe-Rocca

Pull on your thread

So the work is all about pulling on the thread that is yours to pull on. But how do you find out what that is? My approach to purpose, to finding that thread, is that it depends on who you are and how this connects with what the world needs. In the Changework Compass, we work on deepening both of these things, because only through that can we find out where you are particularly well positioned to contribute. There is one particular tool I have created for that process that I think you will find helpful.

Introducing:

Find Your Cause Flowchart

Remember the flowcharts we used to see in magazines as kids? That’s what inspired the structure of this tool :) Just follow the arrows, consider each question, and then follow the next arrow depending on your answer to the next question… Until you get to the ‘Green light’ which validates that you might have just identified the cause you are meant to focus on right now!

The flowchart will help you:

  • Reflect on what causes you have the most connection to
  • Clarify where you might have personal legitimacy or leverage that you can act upon
  • Consider where you have experience and expertise, and where less so
  • Explore any potential power dynamics that might need to be mitigated
  • Land on one or two causes that you are truly well positioned to contribute to

What others have said

"I’d recommend this to anyone who’s feeling at a crossroads, who wants to be part of meaningful change but isn’t sure where to start or how they fit in."

Verena Lorenz

"Nora has a rare ability to guide with exactly the right system change tools — never overwhelming, always leading step by step toward greater clarity"

Jana Ganzmann

"Whether you are interested in finding, strengthening, or revising how you want to make positive change happen, I highly recommend this!"

Raquel Serrano

Because when you care deeply, focus is a matter of survival.

How many of us have burned out or sacrificed our health in other ways because we tried to do too much?

You can’t do it all. None of us can. Especially not if our ambition and hope is to contribute to profound change, perhaps even systems change. That calls for focus, for going deep rather than broad.

Nota bene: this doesn’t mean that we stop caring about many other causes. We can still sign petitions, join protests, take actions in other ways… The point here is that we know where to focus our main energy, for now.

It also doesn’t mean that we stop thinking holistically! On the contrary, knowing everything is interconnected, whether we work on transforming the education system or spearhead the transition to renewables or protect the rights of indigenous peoples, we do so holding other needed paradigm shifts in our hearts and minds.

What the Flowchart will do is help you identify where to dive deep - the thread that is yours to pull on.

I need this!

This is for you if

  • You struggle to focus, even though you know that is would be needed
  • You are in a transition and want to identify the cause that is yours to contribute to in the next chapter
  • You feel pulled in so many directions, and often end of feeling scattered in your day to day life

I’m Nora, the creator of the Find Your Cause Flowchart

Founder of Parayma, the well change atelier, and collaboratio helvetica, and mentor for changeworkers who want to work with and learn from someone who understands the unique struggles of this work.

Since 2010, after I awoke to the state of the world, I’ve dedicated my life and career towards shifting paradigms for a more just, regenerative, and beautiful future for everyone. Being fully committed to this work, very passionate and also neurodivergent, I am no stranger to feeling pulled in many different directions.

Finding the cause I am best positioned to contribute to has made a massive difference in my life. Both in terms of my mental health / sanity, and in terms of the contribution I have been able to bring. It has guided major decisions, such as whether I should accept a fancy job offer to go work for the government or not. It has helped me stay true to my path, and focus on where I can truly move the needle. I hope it will do the same for you!

If you would like to make a difference in the world

But aren’t sure what to focus on, the Find Your Cause Flowchart is for you. It’s 100% free, and I’m excited for you to get your hands on it!
