Applying the Cynefin Framework is an essential step for any leader or changeworker navigating complex or uncertain situations. When used well, it prevents some of the most common and costly mistakes in systems change work: applying the wrong kind of logic to the wrong kind of context. This template will be your ally.

The Cynefin Framework is a model for making sense of the type of system or context you find yourself in, so that you can choose the most appropriate way to act. It describes five domains: Clear, Complicated, Complex, Chaotic, and Confusion. Each domain has a different relationship between cause and effect, and calls for a different mode of leadership and decision-making.
One of the most common mistakes in changework is treating a complex context as though it were merely complicated, assuming that enough expertise or analysis will yield the right answer. In a complex system, cause and effect are only visible in retrospect, and any intervention changes the system itself.
The Cynefin Framework gives you a shared vocabulary and a clear frame for navigating this, whether you are working alone, with a team, or alongside a wider group of stakeholders.
After applying the Cynefin Framework, you will:
- Have a clearer sense of what kind of context or system you are operating in, and what that means for how you should lead, decide, and act
- Have a shared language to use with your team or stakeholders when discussing what type of approach a given challenge actually calls for
- Have identified where you or your organisation may be applying an ordered logic to a context that is in fact complex, and what a more appropriate response might look like
- Have a reference point to return to as contexts shift, supporting more adaptive and responsive leadership over time
Use-case examples
Reflect by yourself on a current challenge or project to assess what kind of system you are navigating, and whether your current approach is well matched to that context
Introduce the Cynefin Framework to your team or organisation to build a shared capacity for sense-making, and to support more informed conversations about strategy and decision-making
Use the framework in a stakeholder or planning process to align on what kind of action is appropriate given the nature of the challenge, and to avoid defaulting to familiar approaches that may not fit
