Changeworker of the week #2: Winnie Cheche Making Climate Action a Community-Powered Movement
Aug 06, 2025
Winnie Cheche is transforming climate action into a people-led movement, one story, one voice, and one seed at a time. Through her platform, The Eco Advocate, she creates a space where climate conversations are not just technical debates but lived experiences everyone can relate to.
Her vision is clear: to break barriers that keep communities - especially underrepresented African voices - away from environmental change-making, and instead, bring climate action back to the people.
Through the #MyPieceForChange campaign, we invite people to share their unique contributions to collective transformation. This series exists to honor their stories, amplify their voices, and connect them with a wider community of like-minded peers. Today, we’re honored to introduce our second Changeworker of the Week: Winnie Cheche, whom we had the pleasure of interviewing for this special spotlight.
What’s your piece for change?
My piece for change is making climate action a community-powered movement, one story, one voice and one seed at a time. My initiative for change is centered around creating an inclusive and relatable platform where conversations about climate change transform into lived experiences.
What inspired you to begin this work or stay committed to it?
I started The Eco Advocate to break down barriers that often hinder everyday people from engaging meaningfully in environmental action. These barriers include language, cultural context, emotional disconnect and digital access. We focus on uplifting local voices and grassroots solutions, especially those from underrepresented African communities. Our platform features a mix of authored guest posts and interpreted stories, ensuring that communities are not just seen but also heard in their own words and through collaborative storytelling. This work has connected me with individuals and organizations around the world, fostering networks of solidarity, learning, and shared purpose
What’s one hope or vision you hold for the future?
The Eco Advocate seeks to bring the conversation back to the people in a climate discourse often filled with expert jargon and complex policy briefs. When climate action feels personal and achievable, it becomes transformative
What support or connection are you currently looking for?
I work with orphan centers through establishing of kitchen gardens powered by bucket drip irrigation. This allows directly involving kids in learning climate action. They get to learn on how to produce their own food, and introduction of green spaces around them. Any support towards this will be highly appreciated.
What’s one thing about your field or topic you wish more people knew, considered, or acted on?
Climate action is very easy, by appreciating nature and living right by it, is already one step to the right side. Breaking it down will help us change from business as usual and move towards actions that will help fight climate change.
