Changeworker of the week #3: Silvano Lieger: Accelerating the Protein Transition Toward a Kinder Future

changeworker of the week Aug 13, 2025

Silvano Lieger is working toward a future where animals are off the menu and no one thinks twice about it. Through policy work, stakeholder collaboration, and storytelling, he helps shift both systems and mindsets so that sustainable, ethical proteins become the norm.

His work spans initiatives such as Planted, Protein Transition Switzerland, and Fauna Films, aligning efforts across policy, innovation, and media to accelerate this transformation. Silvano’s story is a reminder that systems change is possible when courage, coordination, and vision come together.

Through the #MyPieceForChange campaign, we invite people to share their unique contributions to collective transformation. This series exists to honor their stories, amplify their voices, and connect them with a wider community of like-minded peers. Today, we’re honored to introduce our third Changeworker of the Week: Silvano Lieger, whom we had the pleasure of interviewing for this special spotlight.

What’s your piece for change?

I work to accelerate the protein transition toward a future where animals are off the menu and no one thinks twice about it. Through policy work, stakeholder collaboration, and storytelling, I help shift both systems and mindsets so that sustainable and ethical proteins become the norm.

What inspired you to begin this work or stay committed to it?

What first moved me was the moral inconsistency of caring about animals while supporting systems that harm them. That initial discomfort turned into long-term commitment when I saw how structural change is possible. Through my work at Planted, Protein Transition Switzerland, and Fauna Films, I have seen the power of aligned efforts across policy, innovation, and storytelling to move the needle..

What’s one hope or vision you hold for the future?

That industrial animal farming is phased out and replaced with ethical, sustainable alternatives. I hope this shift becomes something we collectively take pride in, not something we resist.

What support or connection are you currently looking for?

I am looking to connect with funders, topic experts, and policy allies who want to help shape a food system that is aligned with our values and planetary boundaries. This includes support for storytelling, advocacy, and coalition-building.

What’s one thing about your field or topic you wish more people knew, considered, or acted on?

The protein transition is already underway. The solutions exist, and many of them work. What we need now is coordination, courage, and investment to scale them and to tell the stories that make this future desirable and tangible.
